Just plugged in the new Thesis theme. Turning out to be more coding work than I’d anticipated, and still not entirely happy with the results, but it’s coming along.

Like what up with that ugly grey border around the photo, and how to rid myself of it?

One of my few issues with the Snow Leopard upgrade was how Apple chose to ignore the creating application’s launch code. So when I create a .png file, for instance, in FireWorks, and later click that file to open it, it no longer opens in FireWorks, but in Preview. Which stinks, IMO.

Enter LaunchCodes. $5 bucks fixes the problem, rather gracefully.

So glad CSS came along a few years back and that most everyone excepting MicroSoft embraced it with loving arms. I’ve made a few rudimentary hacks to the basic stylesheet provided with K2 and have a somewhat personalize site. I’ve also taken to entering posts from a 3rd party application called Mars Edit. Will write more about that later. So far it’s working okay, except that my categories don’t always show up locally as they should, but sometimes they do, so I know the feature works, I just can’t get it to work consistently. I like it for no other reason than that their spell checker doesn’t recognize the word MicroSoft.

Spent some time poking under the hood of WordPress, and K2 in particular. Trying to get a handle on modules, understand the PHP and CSS structure before I start hacking into it. I’ve set a ‘site’ up in DreamWeaver, my web application of choice, mainly out of habit. I’m finding that I’m mostly using it to back things up with – my workflow has been flipped round backwards somehow. Normally I edit locally, then post to the server. Now I edit on the server and back up to a local copy. Interesting.

This reminds me of learning to ride a bicycle, and how quickly I went from pulling away from my Dad’s guiding hands to screaming down the steepest hill I could find with my own hands sticking straight up in the air.

Fun!

I plunked down my money on a new domain name today, set up the account and installed WordPress, then went to work on setting up an IMAP email account, moving 5 years of vintage email over to the new server. Everything went smoothly, except (there’s always one snag, just to keep life interesting) I couldn’t get the IMAP folder structure to work correctly on my Mac using the Mail application.

A post at HawkWings clued me into the fix I was looking for, setting me on the straight and narrow path. (INBOX needed to be included in the IMAP path) Thanks Tim.

This is the first site I’ve set up entirely in blogware, and I chose WordPress based soley on the raves it gets online from its many users. I’ve installed the K2 theme, and feel like I’m at the bottom peg of the learning curve, if curves have pegs, that is. It’s going to take some time before I have things looking and working the way I want, let alone understanding how I got them that way to begin with.

This is also the first time I’ve cut the content loose from the barn before the look and feel were all dialed in, but then this is a blog about my work as a filmmaker, photographer and web developer, so I’ve decided to embrace blogging by sharing my experiences in setting up the website as some of the initial posts to the site. I’m way out of my comfort zone with this approach, so I feel like I must be doing something right.
My goals for this site include:

A place to have fun

A place to showcase my work

A place to share my experience with anyone interested in learning from my mistakes

A place to learn new things myself

Above all, I’d like this site to be interesting, educational, and entertaining to folks who drop by. Please take a moment to write me and tell me whatever is on your mind.

Thanks, Chris
